Unibond RE

Another first in recycling

Contains more post-consumer recycled content than any other commercial broadloom backing

As the biggest recycler in the flooring industry, it's no surprise that Mohawk would be the first to manufacture a carpet backing with 20% post-consumer recycled content: The real surprise is that we did it without having to retool our manufacturing facility, make wholesale changes to our materials, reduce our performance warranty, or take on other significant new costs. In fact, we didn't even raise prices. How did we do it? Simply by working harder everyday to continually improve our manufacturing processes for sustainability. The result is Unibond RE - a remarkable backing that protects the environment while also protecting end users with its moisture barrier and full lifetime warranty.

What all this really means

What does 20% post-consumer recycled content actually mean? It means that every square yard of Unibond RE carpet backing uses one-fifth less raw material in production - preserving more of the earth's natural resources. It also means that large quantities of processed materials which have already been used by the consumer are no longer destined for the landfill. Instead, we put them to good use in our carpet backing.

Less resources used in production, too.

Many commercial broadloom backing systems require vast amounts of energy to cure the water in their latex backing systems….Not ours. To reduce the environmental impact of Unibond RE even further, we have completely eliminated any use of water in the manufacture of this product. We even use 10% bio-based renewable resources in our production process. Today, this unique broadloom backing system is third party certified as an Environmentally Preferred Product under the NSF-140 Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard.
