Using our new SMART Book (Sustainable Materials and Responsible Technologies), we are able to present endless carpet selections to customers while reducing our dependence on actual carpet samples by over 60%. Because this book uses digital imaging, it requires 63% less virgin raw materials than a traditional carpet sample folder. With each product line that we convert to SMART Book samples, we can save enough energy to power up to 4 homes for a whole year. As we continue to replace traditional sample folders with SMART Book samples, the energy savings will be substantial. Later, when styles or colors change, these simulated samples can be easily updated with minimal impact on the environment. Because this new solution also reduces the weight of our sample folders by more than 50%, we save a tremendous amount of fuel during shipping.

Custom sampling made sustainable

The ADS (Accelerated Design System) is a computerized simulation used for custom sampling and product development. It reduces energy usage, raw material usage, shipping costs, and the fuel associated with shipping by replacing tufted carpet samples with digital carpet simulations. They are printed on 100% recycled paper and are recyclable themselves. Lees Carpets, a division of Mohawk, created approximately 25,000 ADS-generated carpet samples in 2005, saving nearly 6,300 gallons of oil. That's the kind of savings that make a real difference for the environment.
